Redhat 7.3 skipjack Beta2- why still python 1.5x ?

No, they have no such belief.  It is simply that their 
administration tools use 1.5, and are broken under 2.x, and said 
tools all look for /usr/bin/python.  In other words, what you've 
just done (relinking /usr/bin/python to python2) has broken many 
of their admin tools.
