python versioning and external packages

Hi,

I've got problems with installing external packages on a system where
the only "python" is 2.2.1c1.

The binary "python2.2" has a link python and everything seems to be ok
but when it comes to installing an external package (pybligrapher)
I've got a nasty configure error - python not found, >= 1.5.2 is
required...

Seems ridiculous at a first sight but for someone who cannot consider
himself a autoconf guru it's a serious thing ;-).

Those anyone know a workaround ?
