The physical process of actually replying to the message (with no
additional material) in your mailreader might only take a second if
you're a fast typist/clicker, but as you say, that's only a small
portion of the process involved. Even the full SMTP transaction usually
takes a little over a second to physically deliver the mail. Deciding
what to do with it and the overhead on both sides certainly takes longer
than a second.
