Others have, too.  It's widely recognized that
Python-C interfacing is safe even for newcomers
(well, at least newcomers willing to incant, 
"reference counting"), while Perl-C remains so 
difficult in general that it's one of the prin-
cipal not-always-spoken-aloud motivations behind
Perl 6.
