Learning how to program... but what's the best way?

Sounds difficult. I'd start with something simple. And in fact when I
was at that age, and learnt languages like C, C++ and Modula-2, the
first programs I wrote were always Tic-Tac-Toe (very simple) and Number
Mind.

Tic-Tac-Toe should be easy enough to start with. And both of them can be
programmed with a simple text-mode interface (print and raw_input),
without requiring a GUI.
