Tkinter Help Please

Can someone explain what _tkinter in the Tkinter.py refers to?

Specifically from line:35 of Tkinter.py

import _tkinter # If this fails your Python may not be configured for Tk

Ok how do I compile Python to be configured for Tk and where is the _tkinter
module located?
