text manipulation examples

I work with a lot of text files that come in different formats and
sometimes resemble a jumbled mess. I've been learning python for the
past few months and have been impressed with it. However, I'd like to
see examples of string manipulation of text files, which are often
lacking in the books I've gotten so far(if I'm wrong, please point me
to the book.) Can anyone point me to examples or have examples I could
take a look at.
