python -u under cygwin telnet

I'm not doing exactly what you are, but I've had 
great success controlling serial ports in Solaris
and Win2K using pySerial,

Not so long ago I posted some working code titled
"Working (basic) Eurotherm Temp Controller" on this alias.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.  I need
to do the same thing you are in the next phase of my project.
