IMHO the good thing about DocBook is that it is very modular and you can
start using it without knowing the internals. You can approach it step
by step while being productive from day one.
I have started using DocBook (XML version, XSLT transformation to HTML)
last year and had no clue about XSLT. You can set various parameters and
when you use a CSS stylesheet the HTML looks great. Actually I started
out extending DocBook, but it turned out, that I could achieve my goal
just by specifying parameters.
I was disappointed about the lacking support for other targets like PDF
and FO, but that was last year and I should check again ...
