Python and open source in medical applications

There was a recent thread here about the use of open source software, and
python software, in medical fields.  I came across some information in Brave
GNU World, which people might be interested in.  There is a debian
distribution being developed which is aimed specifically at medical
installations, and there is a project called Gnumed, aimed (as far as I
could see) at handling paperwork and information databases for medical
uses - it appears to be mainly written in Python.
