Another "solution" (still very much a toy, unfortunately) is the
Python in PHP extension that I've been developing in my spare time:

The motivation behind it is basically the same as above: to allow a
PHP front-end to share back-end code with Python.
I'll be presenting my work in two sessions at the International PHP
Conference next week in Frankfurt.
