A trick to shortening a groups.google link is to identify the thread or
message identifer and the specific message id and just pass that part.
These are the segments that start 'selm=' or 'threadm='. In the reference
above, it's this part:
threadm=mailman.997727540.19628.python-list%40python.org
then put http://groups.google.com/groups? in the front to get:
http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=mailman.997727540.19628.python-list%
40python.org
