If you mean that quasimodes haven't been successful in popular text
editors - true. But quasimodes are actually used in several popular
programs. In Adobe Photoshop, holding down the space bar switches you
to the "hand" tool (which moves the image around); releasing the space
bar reverts you to the previous tool. Holding down command-spacebar
gives you the zoom-in tool, and holding down option-spacebar gives you
the zoom-out tool. (The modifier keys are different on Windows.)
These are quasimodes.
