I don't know if this helps very much, but...

In french we *almost always* use "octet" for
8bit bytes. Sometimes for 7bit.
And for 4bit, we use "quartet", which is mostly
seen in HP48 world.
It concerns only software, since I don't know
very well "hardware words".
