How to explain exactly what "def" does?

Not a beautiful use, but the syntax is EXACTLY like that used in set 
theory/mathematic proofs. If you have to sit through as many math 
classes as I do, the syntax is extremely clear. However, when combined 
with other constructs, it's power is used for evil and it's a Bad Thing. 
I feel the same way about lambdas and FP, which I still haven't gotten 
my head around...
