It made me think of Nero Wolfe, a fictional detective written by
novelist Rex Stout.  'Pfui' was one of his most common expressions.
And when accused of cowardice, he (Wolfe) said: 'I can dodge folly
without backing into Fear.'  (_The Doorbell Rang_, 1965).
