I disagree.

I leave my W2K system on all the time. No mishaps. The thing that's a POS
is my Logitech cordless keyboard and mouse combo. The keyboard died a few
weeks ago, the mouse chews up batteries in less than 4 weeks.

Things are working fine here for me. W2K SP3, VC++ 6.0 SP5, VSS 5.0 SP
whatever, FrontPage 2000 SP3, Office SP3, Outlook, Word, IE6 latest greatest
patch level. Notice I don't use "new" stuff.

The only POS in the entourage is Outlook Express for newsreading, now *that*
sucks. I've downloaded Forte Agent but I've fallen asleep about installing
it. Way too busy. When OE crashes I take it as a sign of relative
importance. I did install QE-Quotefix, which fixes one of its major
problems.
