Soundex or Metaphone algorithms ?

Soundex (written in C) used to be part of the Python standard library.  It
was removed a few revs ago.  There is a Python implementation available at

    http://www.musi-cal.com/~skip/python/

(search for "soundex").  If performance is a big deal for your application,
there is also a link to the original soundex.c.
