python equiv of perl's split?

Easiest is perhaps:

>>> re.findall(":|[^:]+", "test:one:two:three")
['test', ':', 'one', ':', 'two', ':', 'three']

But the best is probably to rewrite the code so you don't need the colons 
in the list.
