I sometimes find it handy to leave out underscore items:
>>> [name for name in dir() if not name.startswith('_')]
[]
>>> x=123
>>> [name for name in dir() if not name.startswith('_')]
['name', 'x']
vs.
>>> dir()
['__builtins__', '__doc__', '__name__', 'name', 'x']
