You could upgrade to python 2.3.

2.2 does not come with inbuilt SSL support, whereas 2.3 does.

Try the following piece of code on 2.2 and 2.3, and you'll see what I mean.

import socket

if hasattr(socket, "ssl"):
    print "Yep, secure sockets supported"
    print "Nope, secure sockets not supported"
