It does work as advertised in 2.2.2.  I also finally found it in the 2.2.2b1 section of Misc/NEWS (but NOT in the 
"What's New" section of the HTML / downloadable docs).

I also figured out how to implement it with a translate() instead; always something new to learn ;-)
