Problems compiling on a Red Hat 7.3 based system

I have compiled Python 2.3.3 on a RedHat 7.2 machine, though I didn't
use an RPM.  I'm not sure about the "/lib/cpp fails sanity check"
message, but maybe the second problem is due to a missing package.
I have a <linux/errno.h> on my system:
    $ rpm -qf /usr/include/linux/errno.h
    kernel-headers-2.4.7-10
