Splitting a list

Here's my version as a generator function:
def split(it, elem):
l = []
for i in it:
if i == elem:
yield l
l = []
else:
l.append(i)
yield l
>>> list(split(" a b c ", " "))
[[], ['a'], ['b'], ['c'], []]
>>> " a b c ".split(" ")
['', 'a', 'b', 'c', '']
>>> l = [1,2,3,-1,4,5,-1,8,9]
>>> list(split(l, -1))
[[1, 2, 3], [4, 5], [8, 9]]
