Using 2.4, looks like the logic is in itertools.groupby:

 >>> from itertools import groupby
 >>> l = ['a', 'b', 'c', 'c', 'd', 'd', 'd', 'e']
 >>> list(x for x, _ in itertools.groupby(l))
['a', 'b', 'c', 'd', 'e']
