It misses the "-i" thing. You have to wrap it:
NEWNAME=mktemp foo.XXXXXX
mv file $NEWNAME
your_awk $NEWNAME > file
rm $NEWNAME (unless there is a backup argument after the "-i")
mv $NEWNAME file.bak (if there is one)
