why python is slower than java?

Old. Unfortunately the Mac is no longer my primary machine and not 
up-to-date. I just used it to get timings comparable to yours. It's
Java 1.4.1_01
Python 2.3.3
Mac OSX 10.2.4

...We now return to our regularly scheduled program of trying to 
convince Java programmers to try Python...
