Ah -- that was what I didn't get: I hadn't understood f(@_args) to be 
more than f(*list(_args)) and so the rest made no sense at all to me.
Sort of an evalquote kind of thing (I think, it has been decades), I
guess.  Thanks for taking the time to explain.
