If I understand correctly, this is what you are trying to achieve:

 >>> import re
 >>> temp = "something [PROMPT:foo] something [PROMPT:bar] something ..."
 >>> prompt_re = re.compile(r"\[PROMPT:.*?\]")
 >>> prompt_re.findall(temp)
['[PROMPT:foo]', '[PROMPT:bar]']
