Knowing the signature of a function

Use the inspect module like:
>>> def tf( a, b, c, *arguments, **keywordArguments ):
... print "tf"
...
>>> import inspect
>>> inspect.getargspec( tf )
(['a', 'b', 'c'], 'arguments', 'keywordArguments', None)
