if you printed "x" (the filename), that doesn't sound very likely.
maybe you printed some other variable?  (like "dirs")

use two variables:

    for name in listing:
        fullname = os.path.join(directory, name)
        if os.path.isdir(fullname):
            dirs.append(name)
