I would do this:

if os.name == ''posix':
    linuxStuff()
elif os.name == 'nt':
    windowsStuff()
elif os.name == 'os2': ...
-------------------
os.name is  'posix', 'nt', 'os2', 'mac', 'ce' or 'riscos'
