There's a utility called xclip that you can wrap with popen2 or
something similar. I use my own proctools:
import proctools
XCLIP = proctools.which("xclip")
es, arg = proctools.getstatusoutput("%s -o -selection primary" %
(XCLIP,))
"arg" has the X selection.
