I eventually went with:

         file, ext = os.path.splitext(picture)
         im = Image.open (picture)
         im.thumbnail(size, Image.ANTIALIAS)
         im.save(file + ".thumbnail" + ext)

jpg = re.compile(".*\.(jpg|jpeg)", re.IGNORECASE)
thumbnailer(".", jpg)
