As well as range(), slicing can do;

for item in [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0][::2]:
      print item

1
3
5
7
9

for item in [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0][::-2]:
      print item

0
8
6
4
2
