I think this is what you're looking for:

In [11]: re.compile('\<(.*)\>').findall('aaaa 123 < 1 aaa < t bbb < a
<tt  > ff > > 2 > bbbbb')
Out[11]: [' 1 aaa < t bbb < a <tt  > ff > > 2 ']
