The books suggestions of others are quite good.
Here is another approach: pick an easily understandable
application, and work doing things with it.

Perhaps immodestly, I think that as soon as you
understand how to define a function and a class,
you can treat this paper

as an introduction to applied Python programming.
The application area is very specific---game theoretic
simulations---but the illustrated techniques are
meant to be more general.
