deets at absinth:~$ export -p | grep HOSTNAME
deets at absinth:~$ export HOSTNAME
deets at absinth:~$ export -p | grep HOSTNAME
declare -x HOSTNAME="absinth"
deets at absinth:~$ python -c "import os; print os.environ.get('HOSTNAME')"
absinth
deets at absinth:~$
