Major modern distros support 'lsb_release', I suppose:

$ lsb_release -i -r -c -d
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 9.04
Release:        9.04
Codename:       jaunty


If that doesn't work; try '/etc/issue'.
