I'm not sure I know the difference between a string variable and a
literal string. Is the difference as simple as:
somestring = u'<stuff>hello world</stuff>'
fromstring(somestring) <-- string variable
vs
XML(u'<stuff>hello world</stuff>') <-- literal string
