ElementTree: How to return only unicode?

Great.  Thus, the following monkeypatch seems to do the trick:

    from xml.etree import ElementTree
    # FixMe: Must go away with Python 3
    ElementTree.XMLTreeBuilder._fixtext = lambda self, text: text
