print writes to sys.stdout unless you tell it different.

Syntax for printing elsewhere is ugly as sin in Python 2, but it works:

>>> print >>sys.stderr, "spam"
spam
>>> print >>capture, "ham"
>>> capture.getvalue()
'spam\nham\n'
