Does the file end with '.TXT' ? This might help:
total = ' '
txts = (nm for nm in os.listdir('.') if nm.lower().endswith('.txt') )
for nm in txts:
f = open(nm, 'r')
total += f.readlines()
message = """\
I also changed read to readlines().
