PyUK (The UK Python User Group)
ACCU Python SIG
INAUGURAL MEETING
2002 April 5
Approximately 30 Python users met during the ACCU Spring Conference to
launch the Python UK user group.
It was agreed that the temporary name for the group would be "PyUK".
THANKS
There was a show of thanks to the ACCU for offering the Python stream on
their conference.
INFRASTRUCTURE
It was further agreed that PyUK would operate as a SIG (special interest
group) within the ACCU (http://www.accu.org). The ACCU already has the
organisational infrastructure that the Python groups needs and the expansion
of the ACCU's activities to include Python was seen as an all round good
thing.
Python users would have to join the ACCU but the costs are modest and no one
saw this as a barrier. (http://www.accu.org/membership/public/index.htm)
Information on the constitution of the ACCU can be found here:
http://accu.org/membership/public/constit.htm
ACCU COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE
Dr. Tim Couper volunteered to be a co-opted member on the ACCU committee.
PUBLICATIONS
Python users would contribute to and benefit from the ACCU's two
publications: "C-Vu" and "Overload". Paul Brian volunteered to coordinate
submissions for publication.
EVENTS
Dr. Tim Couper (TAC Software) volunteered to organise PyUK events.
WEB SITE
While there may be the possibility of some Web space on the ACCU site, there
was also seen to be a need for some dedicated space. Chris Withers (New
Information Paradigms Ltd) offered some Wiki/Zope hosting.
TRAINING
There was some group discussion about the possibility of offering Python
training. Paul Brian volunteered to coordinate trainers and Andy Robinson
suggested a possible venue. Dale Strickland-Clark (Riverhall Systems Ltd),
John Pinner (Clockwork Software Systems), Duncan Booth (RCP Consultants Ltd)
and others could prepare courses, if sufficient interest was generated. The
courses could be advertised on the Web site, in ACCU publications and
elsewhere.
