Sure it can, and no you won't.  Use MacGzip to unpack the ".gz" part of it.
Then use Suntar to unpack the tar.  Both utilities are available at your
favorite Mac archive.

Or if you have purchased the enhanced version of Stuffit Expander, I
believe it will unpack the whole thing in one fell swoop.
