Thanks again for all of your help. Here's another one. Copying the Prefs folder to another volume and get the following exception:

>>> import findertools
>>> findertools.copy('Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences', 'cwalker:')
Traceback (innermost last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in ?
  File "Macintosh HD:Utilities:Python 1.5.1:Mac:Lib:findertools.py", line 49, in copy
    return finder.copy_to(dst_alias, _from=[src_alias])
  File "Macintosh HD:Utilities:Python 1.5.1:Mac:Lib:lib-scripting:Finder_7_0_Suite.py", line 52, in copy_to
    _reply, _arguments, _attributes = self.send(_code, _subcode,
  File "Macintosh HD:Utilities:Python 1.5.1:Mac:Lib:lib-toolbox:aetools.py", line 174, in send
    return self.sendevent(self.newevent(code, subcode, parameters, attributes))
  File "Macintosh HD:Utilities:Python 1.5.1:Mac:Lib:lib-toolbox:aetools.py", line 167, in sendevent
    reply = event.AESend(self.send_flags, self.send_priority,
Mac OS Error: (-1712, 'the AppleEvent timed out')

Yet the copy does not fail. I'm assuming that the AppleEvent goes through, but
the script is waiting for a response. Is it safe to just 'except: pass' this
excption?

TIA
