[Pythonmac-SIG] _environ using python as a bundled library

The problem was fixed, but I can't for the life of me remember how....

What Python version are you using? Could you try checking out 
the CVS python, and see whether the problem is fixed there? You 
are using the framework Python, I assume, not a .so-based Python 
without frameworks? This hasn't been tested at all really, so 
you would be on your own then...
