[Pythonmac-SIG] Upgrading /usr/bin/python to 2.3.1?

I'm out of my depth in this discussion, but I really want this all to 
"Just Work", so I have a question:

Which of Bob or Jack's proposals is more like the situation on other 
Unixes? Optimium or not, Python seems to work just fine there. And I 
have at least three versions of Python on my Linux box at the moment, 
and I'm pretty sure I've had different sub-versions in the past.
