Some work was done on porting wxPython to MacPython-OS9, but I haven't
heard anything about it for a long time. So, there's a good chance that
the developers lost interest...

Tkinter does not run smoothly on MacOS9. A couple of years ago, when
Scriptics started, Mac development of Tcl/Tk was basically halted, and
Tcl/Tk got worse and worse on MacOS9. So don't expect a miracle from
Tkinter on MacOS9.
But your script will run reasonably smoothly on MacOSX, with MacPython
2.3. Tcl/Tk on OSX is in a pretty good shape, still not perfect but
definitely usable and continuing to improve.
