You dont need to remove anything -- you can simply add modules you dont 
want to the ignore_packages list in setup.py. I recommend using a CVS 
build. I have not had to mess with sparse in a long time.

Some stats tests are known to fail -- they are not a big deal. That 
module is earmarked for a remake soon, I think.

These issues have all been mentioned on the scipy mailing list, so you 
might want to have a peek at the archives.
